JOBY Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM Review

JOBY Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM ReviewI've been anticipating trying out the new Gorillapod from JOBY the SLR-ZOOM model. This model is designed for use with DSLR, SLRs and just about any camera you have that is less than 6.6lb. That's another thing I noticed right off the bat, this little

tripod can accommodate up to 6.6lb which is a large amount of weight for a tripod. I've been looking into getting a full size tripod and I can tell you to carry that much weight you're running into the mid grand range.

JOBY Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM ReviewHaving a small tripod like the SLR-ZOOM that can handle nearly 7lbs is great.
The Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM comes with a three-leg tripod and a full motion ball-head. With one action to lock both the ball-head and the rotation, it's easy to make adjustments in the field when your hands are full.

JOBY Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM ReviewWhat sets the Gorillapod tripods apart from all others is their legs. The legs of the Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM are fully articulating and can be shaped into any form for latching your tripod to trees, posts or even to the ground. There are no limitations but your imagination when it comes to positioning this tripod!

JOBY Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM ReviewWhat gives it such great hold is that the gray ring and the foot of the tripod is covered with an extremely grippe rubber. The tripod will hold even when wet to any surface. Very useful in getting those perfect shots in places you can't get into with a full size tripod.

JOBY Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM ReviewThe ball-head of this tripod is equipped with a fluid level and is fully adjustable in every way. You also get a quick release for the mount, so you can get your camera off the pod in a hurry. Not having to unscrew each time you want to take a quick shot is great.

JOBY Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM ReviewOne of the best things about this tripod is that it's stiff. I'm not sure if it will stay stiff but so far (two weeks) it's been great, everywhere I placed the pod it stayed put even on windy days. Another thing I found it good for is a counter balance when taking shots. You can bend the arms so it's up against your chest for stability. Don't get me wrong - it's not super comfortable but it works very well for quick shooting but I would not use it all day like that.

You can also remove the ball head just like you can with any professional tripod and mount your pod legs right onto a telephoto lens that has a mount. You also get a Permanent universal 1/4" tripod screw and 3/8" adapter screw that you can mount to just about anything you need!

I also found it ideal if you need light in an area where you can't get a large tripod and flash into. The Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM makes a nice little accessory for flashes. You can mount it anywhere to get the right light in the shot!

I do a lot of shooting in the woods. Most of the time I can't use a full size tripod in the spaces I find myself. Having the Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM in my pack makes taking steady shots much easier and for its weight (just over half a pound). Its nothing to carry on backpacking trips or weekend outings and to be honest, if it was heavy I wouldn't use it. Lastly, it's extremely stable - much more than I ever thought it would be. Because it's so light I do carry it all the time and find myself using it more than my full size tripod.
