GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration pack

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration pack

The 1600 is the largest of the hydration packs by GEIGERRIG. This is a new company that is making a pack like no other on the market. What sets these packs apart from all other is their hydration system. GEIGERRIG has developed a system where you can pressurize your water bladder without having to add air into the main water compartment. This is done using a two-chamber design so that when the pack is full of water it will apply pressure to the outside forcing water into the tube.

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packFor many years I've biked 76 miles a week around town and back and forth from work, so I know a little when it comes to a quality pack and hydration! In order to get pressurized water in my pack I used to have to fill the pack with air then sit on the pack to get water to spray out. I did this a lot for cleaning my bike or spraying down my face in the summer on those hot days!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packThis is why I feel the GEIGERRIG packs are a very welcome addition to anyone who travels or uses hydration packs often. For most people they will not know the benefits that a pack like this can offer, but for you guys who have lived out of your packs traveling week after week like I have you know how useful this can be.

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packOften when I got to work I would have to spray my legs down to get rid of mud so that I could change into my work clothes (which I carried in my pack), but with the GEIGERRIG 1600 you can do this much easier then I used to.

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packAll you need to do is use the small pump on the left strap and in about 30 seconds you have all the pressure you need built up to clean your bike or yourself when traveling! I also like that you can add an inline filter to this pack - it makes taking water from anywhere much safer and when I lived in Ontario there were some iffy water spots I re-supplied from so having an inline filter would have been welcome then and now! Many companies do the inline filters but I will say this, there are few you can clean like the GEIREGGIG water bladder. This bladder is fully reversible for cleaning and can even be placed in a dishwasher. This is something I loved and is a must with an inline filter, just think of all the crap in the water you pick up over the day that has been sitting in the pack all day, so you really want to clean that thing out well. Being able to turn the bladder inside out and throw it in the dishwasher is phenomenal for cleaning!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packThe Bladders also have locking fittings. This way if you should have to remove or adjust your pack you can remove the tubs without spilling a drop. This is also great for pulling the pack out and filling without having to worry like you do with some packs that it's all going to come spraying out when you remove the tubes!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packI've carried a similar pack like this for years and I like a larger pack for everyday travel when it comes to biking. A lot of people use smaller water packs but when you travel by bike a lot you soon find you need a pack like the 1600 for all your gear. You have bike parts, pump, patches, tools, work clothing, sweater for when it gets cold, snacks, and so on, and you quickly see where a larger pack is more suited to traveling every day back and forth from work or play.

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packI think that the 1600 is the perfect pack for doing such commuting. The bladder in this pack is a 3 liter water bladder which will hold a full days worth of water. You have two compartments large enough to fit all your gear and in the front compartment is a very nice fold out organizer that will allow you to fill it up with pens, money, change, and other things you need to get to fast, and after you have filled this second compartment up you can then fold this flap that houses it all out and over all the gear! This is by far the best design for an organizer I've seen!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packI've seen many packs with organizers but they tend to be sewn into the back of the pack and when filled up, you still have to dig for it, but with the RIG 1600 all these items you need to get to can be folded right over top of all the gear allowing them to be accessed quickly without having to dig which is a simple idea but makes all the difference to someone like me who lives out of a pack most of the time!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packThis is a case of "you don't need to reinvent the wheel" but making that wheel much more user friendly is the best thing you can do when it comes to a pack! Another nice feature is they have lined the whole pack with a lighter color. If you ever had to find something In a black or dark color pack you know what I'm talking about, having the lighter gray liner in the all the packs pockets makes it a breeze to find small items like pressure gages and snacks!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packOn the outside of the pack you'll find a waterproof zipper which house a very nice little pocket that was designed for an iPhone or cell phone, this pocket fits an iPhone perfectly and has a small opening so that your headphones can come out. I know this is not a new idea when it comes to packs, but my old bike pack didn't have it and now that I do I don't know how I lived without it! Another point to mention for this pocket is the zipper – it's waterproof, but it also has a smart design, they've put a small rubber like port that your zipper can be pushed right up into and this makes it hard for anyone trying to pull open your zipper and get at the phone.

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packThis is something I used to worry about on subways. There is one thing I would change and that's to change out or get rid of the zipper pull on this zipper, and if you do that it will make it nearly impossible for someone to come along and open that zipper, because once the zipper pull cord is removed and the zipper is pushed up into the covering port you can barely grab it and when on a subway or just in passing I don't think anyone could! It's a small modification that you can do yourself, but it will make the pocket much more secure, and in this day and age with the price of phones a little more security is always welcome!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packSomething I liked a lot about this pack, and never could figure out why everyone doesn't do it, is the reverse zippers. With this pack all the zippers are the reversed design except for thewaterproof one on the IPhone pocket, which is waterproof so no need! I love reverse zippers and I recommend everyone try to get gear with them, I've never had them catch or lockup on me, and best of all they keep a

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packlot of the dirt dust, water and mud out of the zippers. I use to hate to get mud in the zippers because the grains of sand would catch and mess with how the zippers work and was just a pain in every aspect to clean. Also getting dirt in zippers works just like your chain on a bike, it can wear down the teeth and break down the zipper faster!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packYou also get two small reverse zipper pockets in the waist strap, and this brings me to another feature I know many bikers will like, you can remove the waist strap and even change it out for a smaller one! I personally like the larger waist strap but I know it can get in the way some days so being able to remove it can be very useful!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packI do want to point out the spandex type of pocket on this belt makes it easy to put larger oversize item in the pockets but can become damaged over time... but like I said you can remove it when it wears out making it easy to fix without having to buy a new pack. Also these pockets are not small; in fact they run the full length of the waist strap and connect to each other so you can stash much larger items than you would think!

GEIGERRIG RIG 1600 Hydration packOn the outside of the pack near the waist strap pad you will find a small but hidden drainage hole that is placed perfectly in the center of the pack to ensure no matter what you spill it will drain out! On either side of the pack you will find small pockets, which are roughly, the size of your hand, they are ideal for carrying snacks gloves and other items such as wallets. I will have to admit I miss my large mesh pockets on each side. I used to use them to carry my bike shoes when I popped them off and wore flip-flops for walking around the mall!

When carrying the pack it's surprisingly comfortable even when loaded up. If you should want to carry the pack by hand it has a large padded handle at the top. This is something I want to point out as well - many companies put these handles on and don't think first, and often when the pack is full it becomes unstable and pulls or pushes one way and that tends to be towards your leg while it's being carried. This can suck if you need to carry the pack for long periods in your hand so it's nice that the GEIGERRIG packs are aligned perfectly so you don't get that unbalance when carrying.

Now the only down side I could find with the pack, as you can see from one of the photos when opening the packs larger pocket, if you have the retention straps fastened you will catch them on the zipper. Not a big deal at all but it's something you will want to watch out for when opening the pack, you want to do it right and open the straps first!

Bottom line I loved this pack!! So much in fact I will be making it my main biking pack. The features in this hydration pack are all the features I would have put in a bike pack if I were making it, and I think any serious mountain biker or commuter would love it!
